I have been selected to take part in Artist Carousel
I am pleased to say that I have been selected to take part in Artist Carousel, organised by Artforms & Education Leeds. Artist Carousel is a scheme with twins nine visual artists with secondary school art teachers. The artist & teacher work together to plan and organise a presentation of the artist's work, and an accompanying workshop for students at the school. The 'carousel' then moves round and each artist moves to another participating school, where they deliver their presentation and workshop to another group of students.

I have been paired with Ralph Thoresby school in Leeds, and will shortly be visiting the school to meet with the art teachers and begin planning my workshop.

This seems like a fantastic opportunity, and I'm very excited about being able to share my work with young people, and hopefully inspire them. I hope in the future to be able to lead workshops of my own, and undertake more work with people, as opposed to just working alone in my studio. This is an area of my working life I am very excited about.

Hillsborough Forum: Project to Create Artwork & Brighten up Empty Shop Windows in Hillsborough, Sheffield
I have been working with the Hillsborough Forum on a project to create artwork and brighten up the windows of empty shop premises in Hillsborough, Sheffield.

The first in a series of window displays is inspired by old photographs of Hillsborough shops in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, with the slogan 'Hillsborough: A great place to buy and sell for over 100 years'. This shop is based on an old Ironmonger's shop and the window is full of garden tools, candles, seed packets, pots and pans etc.. A painting of the shopkeeper stands in the doorway. The window display is made from painted paper and cardboard, arranged with found objects and ephemera.

I can't emphasise enough just how much I enjoyed decorating this window, and I'm delighted to be able to say that more will follow. I think it really brightens up the highstreet, and hope that once more displays are installed they will have a real impact and become something of a local feature.

There is an article about the Hillsborough Shops Project on the Look Local Website -

HILLSBOROUGH Forum has commissioned local illustrator and artist Emma Metcalfe to decorate some of the empty shop windows in Hillsborough. Emma’s first window, which has just been completed in one of the shops on Middlewood Road, is decorated like an old-fashioned ironmonger and carries the theme ‘Hillsborough: A Great Place to Buy and Sell for over 100 Years’. Emma based the design on old photographs found in the local archives. Hillsborough Forum’s Nick Waterfield said: “We started the idea of dressing empty shops during this summer’s In Bloom competition, but the idea proved so popular with people and created such interest that we thought we’d carry it on. “Being able to use an award-winning local artist like Emma was a real bonus and shows the talent that exists in the area.” Wendy Wells, environment officer at the Forum, added:“We are so grateful to the property owners and agents who are giving us permission to use their shops. We hope that by brightening these shops we can add a bit of colour to Hillsborough this autumn.” Next year, the Forum hopes to develop the idea further and involve local students from Hillsborough College in producing displays for local shops, alongside Emma.

Antiques & Collectables: Ink, watercolour & pencil illustrations
Selection of illustrations of antiques and collectables. I really enjoyed drawing these, particularly those items with lots of intricate detail.

These are coloured with pencil and watercolour, I am finding I am moving towards more traditional media lately, and trying to reduce the amount of colouring done on the computer. I think the textures and colour variations which the watercolour and pencil brings makes the drawings more interesting, and less 'synthetic' than if I'd coloured them using the computer as per normal.

Two vases, the one of the left is glass with painted decoration and gildes handles, the one on the right is a blue and white Oriental Chinese Nankin Vase.

Selection of antiques, mocked up in layout.

French Cuirassier's Helmet, circa 1890 and a Queen's South Africa Medal from the Boer War.

Bracket clock, circa 1780 and unusual German Novelty elephant clock, circa 1900.

Hand Painted Illustrated Owls Screen Prints for Sale, Tawny Owl, Barn Owl and Scops Owl

I am going to be setting up a 'shop' page on my website, and am expanding my range of prints for sale. I have just finished painting my first set of Owl prints.

These are hand silk screened black line prints, which are then individually hand coloured using watercolours.

Due to the hand painted nature of each print, each will vary slightly in colouring.

The three available owl prints shown above are Barn Owl, Tawny Owl and Scops Owl, and each measures 5 x 7 inches. They are suitable for framing in a standard 5 x 7" frame, or in a larger frame with a mount.

Printed on 350gsm heavyweight watercolour paper.

Owl prints are £15 each, supplied unframed and posted in a board back envelope.

Postage within the UK is £2.00 for Recorded Delivery, £2.50 to Europe, and £3.00 to the USA, Canada and rest of the world.
