Screen Printing with Photo Emulsion

My photo emulsion has finally arrived, so I have just exposed my first Photo Emulsion coated screen.

Above you can see the screen, and positive during exposure, and then below the screen after I had just given it a good blast of water to remove the Photo Emulsion.

I will be printing this design as soon as the screen has dried off. It's called 'Night Owl' and is a departure from my normal style, but am enjoying using silk screen printing as a chance to be creative, and have fun outside of my normal drawing style.

I will be selling my prints, so will keep you posted!

My First Silk Screen Print using Diazo Screen Filler

After spending hours working in Photoshop, I sometimes get a craving to do some 'real' art, and on one of these occassions recently I bought a Speedball silk screen printing set.

This is my first attempt at using Diazo Screen filler, which you can either paint on directly with a brush (as I have), or use in combination with Drawing Fluid in order to get a positive print (i.e where the line you draw is printed, rather than the gaps left which are printed, as above).

I've been pleased with the Speedball kit overall, comes with pretty much all you need to make basic prints, but if you want to make prints using the photo emulsion method (which will be my next step) then you will need to buy additional materials.

My design above is for a Christmas card, and will be moving on to more complex prints with more than one colour. I'm hoping to be able to achive a thinner line and more detail using the Photo Emulsion method.

Preparatory Drawings & Roughs for Giant Funfair/Fairground Illustration

Thought it might be nice for people to see some of the prep work that goes into my final illustrations. Before I break out the ink I do quite a few pencil and fineliner drawings/ideas/composition experiments.

I am currently working on a very large fairground poster size illustration, so there is a lot more prep work involved that normal. Above you can see a rough layout sketch and the giant pile of paper that is my prep for this illustration so far!

I am at the stage where I know what I want the image to look like, so now need to go into ink. I dread to think how long this piece is going to take to draw (let alone colour!)

Shambala Illustrated Chinese Lantern

Lack of posts lately down to a number of things, one of which is that I went to Shambala Festival with my friend and fellow illustrator Laura Elliott last weekend.

Lots of fun was had, good music, talented poets, beatboxers and acrobats, and lots of lovely tea and cake. However one of my favourite moments of the weekend was decorating this Chinese Lantern with Laura. You were supposed to write your worries and fears on the lanterns, before releasing them into the sky en mass, however we decided to opt for silliness, because I think that people would a lot happier if they drew more silly pictures and wouldn't have so many worries and fears!
