My Illustrations featured in the new 'Big Book of Comtemporary Illustration' by Martin Dawber

I'm pleased to say that three of my illustrations have been featured in the new 'Big Book of Contemporary Illustration' by Martin Dawber, published by Batsford.

The 'Big Book of Contemporary Illustration' features 400 pages of inspiring contemporary illustration by over 160 illustrators.

Blurb from the back of the book -

Covering the broad range of illustration today, "Big Book of Contemporary Illustration" showcases traditional methods such as painting, sketching and collage alongside computer-aided techniques using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and 3D Studio Max. Whether the art is made using embroidery, found-object sculpture, typography or digitally manipulated photography, this book demonstrates the strength of contemporary illustration, which is undergoing a major revival. This is an essential sourcebook for any creative professional or student and all those who appreciate the art of illustration.

O2 It's Your Community Art Competition Presentation at the LEAF Allotments, Sheffield

Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to be chosen as the national winner of the O2 It's Your Community Art Competition. I very much enjoyed receiving my £500 prize!

I also won £1000 for my chosen local community project, which was LEAF (Local Enterprises Around Food). LEAF is a Sheffield based community project, which encourages local people to grow and prepare their own fresh food at their communal allotment site.

The cheque presentation took place last month at the Herries Road Allotments site, with representatives from O2, Horticultural Support Worker Diane Cocker of LEAF, and most importantly the LEAF volunteers, without whom the project would not be possible.

It was a lovely day, and was nice to have a chance to meet some more of the volunteers, and also have a tour around the fantastic allotments site, and see everything that is being grown there. I found the visit quite inspiring artistically, so many beautiful plants, and a great mix of fruit, vegetables and wildflowers and plants – not to mention abundant butterflies and insects. After the presentation we enjoyed lovely home made soup, made from vegetables grown at the site, not to mention delicious home made cake and crumble.

My day at the LEAF allotments was a real tonic, lovely to be outside, amongst nature, and with the company of volunteers who are very passionate about LEAF and its work.

Editorial Illustration: Snakes and white rabbits: list of bizarre things that students leave behind

Another editorial illustration, this time experimenting with watercolour textures instead of purely flat colour.

Self initiated piece inspired by the Telegraph article 'Snakes and white rabbits: list of bizarre things that students leave behind'.

The article is about the weird and wonderful things that have been left behind by students when they move out of their student accommodation. These range from things you might expect such as Ipods, from things you certainly wouldn't expect such as a parrot and a snake!

Editorial Illustration: 'For Richer and for Even Poorer'

Self promotional editorial illustration inspired by the Telegraph article 'For Richer and for Even Poorer', which talks about how people are cutting back on their wedding spending because of the credit crunch.

The article made me think of the rhyme 'Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do', which has the lines 'It won't be a stylish marriage, I can't afford a carriage, but you'll look sweet, upon the seat, of a bicycle made for two.'

The illustration shows a bride and groom riding a tandem bicycle to save money, instead of opting for a classic car, a limousine or a carriage.
