Street Clutter Threat to Conservation Areas

Self-promotional Editorial illustration inspired by the Guardian Article 'Street Clutter Threat to Conservation Areas'.

The nicest streets in England are gradually being wrecked – sinking under a tide of plastic windows, concrete roof tiles, replacement doors, satellite dishes, smashed-out front gardens and streetscapes cluttered with ugly broken paving, bollards, barriers and traffic signs. This is the verdict of English Heritage, which has for the first time included England's 9,300 conservation areas in its annual register of historic sites at risk, which is published today.

'My Dad's a Birdman', Sheffield Lyceum Theatre Poster Illustration

I was recently commissioned to produce a poster for the Sheffield Lyceum Theatre's Children's Production of 'My Dad's a Birdman', which will be performed in schools.

The story is about a girl and her dad, who wants to be a bird and to enter the Great Human Bird Competition.

The client wanted the illustration to have lots of energy and happiness, and be colourful and attractive to children. The client also had the idea that the father's bird costume should be based on a Mallard, and the little girl's costume should be based on a Swift or Swallow. However, since the costumes are supposed to be home-made, the client wanted me to make sure they didn't look 'bought' or professional.

This illustration will be used on A3 posters, and text will be added.

I've just received some print outs of the finished Museums Sheffield Family Trail Sheets for the Ruskin Gallery and Metalwork Gallery.

I provided the character of John Ruskin for the Ruskin Gallery trail, and the Sheffield Buffer girl for the Metalwork Gallery trail.

Illustration Friday: "Adapt", Illustration of Chameleons in the Jungle

This is my submission for this week's Illustration Friday. The word to respond to was 'adapt'.

This made me think of animals adapting to their surroundings, and this immediately made me think of Chameleons, which change colour to blend into their environment.

This illustration shows lots of chameleons in the jungle, changing their colours to make themselves inconspicuous against their surroundings.
