This is my entry for the O2 'It's Your Community', Community Art Competition.
This is a large an intricate piece, measuring 600 x 600mm in real life, so please Click here to see a large version of the artwork
Entries for the competition had to be inspired by the statment “The world is a better place when our communities are connected”.
My piece is based on a jigsaw puzzle, with each piece showing something which helps a community to connect, both to other communities, and for members of that local community to connect with one another.
My piece is based on the Sheffield community, since that is where I am based - although many of the things represented can apply to any community.
The individual illustrations show...
Top Row (Left to Right) -
1. Mother & Baby Group: Offers opportunities to meet new people in your community. 2.Sharrow Lantern Carnival: This is an annual event where huge glowing lanterns made by local people are carried through the streets.
3. The Winter Gardens: Provide an oasis in the city centre for people to meet, and school parties to visit.
4. Local Libraries: These provide access to books and internet access both for learning and for pleasure.
2nd Row Down (Left to Right) -
1. Noodle Bar: Idea of being introduced to new culture through food.
2. Helping the Elderly: Volunteering to help vulnerable members of the community.
3. The Wolseley Road Medina Mosque: This has had a positive effect in bringing together the local community.
4. Green spaces & Parks: Sheffield is blessed with many of these, and they provide a great place to meet and play, and enjoy being outside.
3rd Row Down (Left to Right) -
1. Local Fete: This could be a summer fete or church fair, or local village fair.
2. Working in an Office: Meeting new people in a working environment.
3. Snooker at the Crucible: The world championships brings lots of people to Sheffield.
4. Graduation Ceremony: Sheffield has two universities so has a big student presence.
Bottom Row (Left to Right) -
1. Rural Public Transport: Connects Sheffield to the Peak District and surrounding area.
2. Church Services: Brings people together in worship, and also as a result of church organised activities.
3. School Walking Bus: Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, these community schemes mean children can walk to school safely.
4. Community Gardening Schemes: There are several of these running in Sheffield, to transform un-cared for ground into beautiful green spaces.

This week's Illustration Friday theme is "time", and my contribution is this experimental piece, which is a selection of doodles taken from my many doodle sheets and miscellaneous pieces of paper which have built up over the last few months on my desk. All the doodles combined represents a few months of drawing and creativity (or at the very least...doodling!)

Here are some illustrations of wild animals which I have drawn recently. I wanted to explore how animals could be drawn in a stylised way, but remain realistic; or characterised so they had individual personalities and expressions.
The animals shown are an elephant and a giraffe (more characterised); then an otter, a lemur and a penguin (stylised yet realistic).

Above are two Admiral characters I have just finished, commissioned by English Heritage for use on a children's factsheet for the Dover Castle Secret Wartime Tunnels.
The characters are black and white so the sheet can be easily photocopied, and children could even colour them in themselves if they wanted to.
